Taylor Atherton Memorial U8 Festival
This Saturday the club will be hosting the inaugural Taylor Atherton Memorial Festival U8 Festival. Many of you will be aware that the club was left devastated by Taylors sudden passing in February and since then there have been number of wonderful events held in his memory by the local football family. The event this Saturday will once again provide us with an opportunity to provide a lasting tribute to Taylor.
The idea for the Festival came about when the club were approached by Ruth Collins, on behalf of the employees of Multipacking Solutions Limited in Killingwort. They wanted to know if there was someway that they could help the club in Taylors memory. She explained to us that both Taylors Dad and Grandad work for company so they wanted to establish something that would act as a legacy for the club in Taylors name. Initial discussions took place and so an U8 Festival to be played every year for the Taylor Atherthon Memorial Shield was born.
Cramlington Juniors Operations Manager Jason Hodgson explained the rational behind the decision. “The U8 age group was chosen as this was the age group at which Taylor first played for the club. I can remember vividly watching his first games for Cramlington, it too was in an U8s Festival held at Hillcrest School in Cramlington. We had three teams playing that day and as he had just joined the club, Taylor had been selected to play in what you might call the third team. By the end of that festival it was quite obvious to everyone he was a special talent. We therefore felt it was fitting that we use the same age group at which he started at to remember him by.”
The event this Saturday will see two Cramlington Juniors teams take on teams from Sunderland AFC and an Ellington Juniors FC All Star team.
The first kick off takes place at 10.30am at Ann Welfare with the final scheduled for 2.30pm.
